Traditional Prelicensure BSN

The Traditional prelicensure BSN is a full-time, upper-division nursing program designed for students who want to become a Registered Nurse (RN) and are completing their first bachelor’s degree. Students pursuing this pathway complete prerequisite coursework and then apply for advancement to the upper-division clinical nursing program. Students selected for advancement complete the upper-division clinical nursing program in either a 16-month year-round schedule or a 24-month academic year schedule. Graduates will earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN to gain RN licensure.

The Traditional BSN is currently available at the Downtown Phoenix, Polytechnic and West Valley campuses.

There are two ways to advance into the upper-division clinical nursing program:

  • Direct Admission is available to incoming first-year students who meet specific admission criteria. Directly admitted students must meet Continuing Eligibility Criteria while attending ASU to advance into the upper-division clinical program.
  • Competitive Admission is available to applicants who do not meet direct admission criteria, transfer students, or ASU students who wish to change their major to nursing. Competitive applicants are placed in any clinical spaces that remain after direct admission students are placed. Placement is not guaranteed.

See below to learn more about each admission pathway.

The upper-division clinical nursing program starts three times per year in the summer, fall and spring terms. There are two advancement cycles each year for three Traditional BSN start dates.

Below are the deadlines to apply for advancement into the upper-division clinical nursing program for each start date. These deadlines do not apply to incoming students who are not ready to apply for advancement.

Cohort Start Schedule Advancement Application Deadline
Summer Cohort 16-month year-round February 1
Fall Cohort 24-month academic year February 1
Spring Cohort 24-month academic year September 1

Direct admission to the nursing major is available to first-year student applicants who meet eligibility requirements. Students directly admitted to nursing who meet Continuing Eligibility Criteria while attending ASU are guaranteed a space in the upper-division clinical nursing program within one year of eligibility.

Direct Admission Requirements
The admission standards for majors in the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation are higher than minimum university standards. First-year admission requirements are:

First-year admission applications to the Bachelor of Science in nursing program that are received after the November 1 application priority date are considered on a space-available basis. Students not offered admission directly to the nursing program are placed in the BS program in community health.

First-year applicants should select an additional major when applying for admission.

There is no guarantee vacant seats will be available.
